How to Get the Most Out of Your Mineral Purifying Mask No Matter Your Skin State

It’s no secret that clay masks have the potential to really give your skin the boost it needs to achieve that real life ‘Instagram’ glow. The good news is that the right combination of ingredients will have your skin looking amazing without having to turn to your makeup bag at all!

Having said that, with the sudden influx of clay masks onto the market, it’s important to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all clay mask that will do away with every skin problem regardless of the state of a person’s skin. Assuming that could mean that you end up with irritated skin in keeping with the irritation you’ll feel at having used a product that’s caused more harm than good.

Here at Apoterra, we are all about skin wellness, which means focusing on building a healthier you from the inside out, and creating a tailored approach to your skincare routine that responds to what your skin needs to be healthy and happy.

Building a weekly mask session into your routine can really help you give your skin some love, and creating the perfect clay mask to do this is key. To help you out we wanted to take some time to give you some options on different things you can do to change things up a bit if your skin needs a bit of an extra boost.

Our Mineral Purifying Mask is a fantastic building block that you can use to customize your clay mask and create the ultimate face pampering session! The mask itself is a balanced blend of French green clay and super gentle white clay. Its purpose is to detox and decongest your skin whilst healing irritations and soothing redness at the same time. The activated charcoal and organic flowers, mixed with a variety herbs, draw impurities out of the skin and simultaneously nourish it. Because of this, it’s an excellent starting point for an outrageously good pamper time.

So without further ado, let’s get to it!

First thing's first…

The first thing you’ll need to do is mix up your mask. The mask comes in a powdered form in a dark glass jar so that we don’t have to include any preservatives to keep it fresh (unlike many of those ready to use masks on the market). Don’t worry though, it’s super easy to do.

Mix a small amount of the mask (about ½ a tbsp.) with about ½ tsp of liquid (like water or milk) until you create a thick paste and pause…I know, how easy was that! Water can be substituted for teas and toners etc which we will discuss later.

Top Tip: Always add a little bit of liquid first and then add more if you need it. If you add too much at the beginning, the mask will be too runny; you can always add but you can’t take away!

At this point, you can add various different things to maximize the benefits the mask on its own will give you. Just to make things easy, we’ve separated the options according to some of the more common skin challenges you might be dealing with.

Options for Dry Skin

If you suffer with dry skin, you can try mixing the mask with yogurt. Yes you read right! Yogurt is a skin healing powerhouse. Essentially, the way it works is that the probiotics within the yoghurt produce help balance the microbiome present on your skin, similar to the way they balance the bacteria in your tummy. This helps to keep the bad bacteria that cause skin irritation under raps. Whilst you won’t see all the action going on with your naked eye, you can look forward to a wonderfully soothing clay mask experience. You can use regular yogurt or coconut yogurt to make this version of the clay mask so you can benefit if one yogurt type doesn’t work for you.

As an alternative, you could mix our mask with our Rose Essential Hydration Mist and bypass the whole yogurt process. Our toner has a vegan hyaluronic acid in it which is an acid that’s found naturally in our bodies and helps to promote a clear, healthy complexion. Add that with the clarifying properties of the rooibos tea and you can see how the toner and the Activated Purifying Clay Mask is a match made in skincare heaven!

Options for Breakout Prone Skin

If your skin is prone to breaking out, you can experiment by mixing your clay powder with our Neroli Complexion Mist. The formula contains Neroli, thyme and willow bark, which together help to reduce blemishes by increasing skin cell turnover.

You can also mix the clay with yogurt if you are acne prone but you also have dry skin, because the probiotics in the yogurt will again help to balance the microbiome of your skin and deal with the bacteria that is causing you to breakout.

If you’re experiencing some inflammation to the skin, you can try mixing the clay powder with some chilled green tea. The polyphenols help to reduce inflammation, and the tea also helps to reduce excess oils on the skin that could be causing buildup in your pores and triggering breakouts. Green tea is also good for your body as well so perhaps you can drink the tea whilst you relax with your mask on and get all the internal benefits as well!

Options for Healthy Skin with Minor Congestions

If your skin is doing pretty well but it is popping up with some minor issues, again you can try mixing your mask powder with our Neroli Complexion Mist which helps to gently clarify any impurities from the skin. The antioxidant rich formula helps to keep minor blemishes at bay and prevents clogged pores. This toner is also great for helping your skin to maintain its natural barrier function so it’s a great all rounder for keeping your skin in great condition.

If you’ve run out of the toner, instead of mixing the clay mask powder with plain water, why not try mixing it with some chamomile tea? This ‘super tea’ helps to even out skin tone, accelerate cell and tissue regeneration and tighten the pores. In addition to this, the tea is packed with antioxidants and it helps to protect the skin from free radical damage. It’s also an anti-inflammatory and will help to soothe the skin. It’s already present in the clay mask but it’s not always a bad thing to double up!

Finally…

Once you have your bespoke mask mixed and ready to go, it’s time to apply it to your face and sit for 10-15 minutes whilst the magic happens. Remember to go the whole way and modify your environment to be a calm, relaxing space, with minimal distractions so you can get the full benefit of taking time to focus on you.

If your skin is really aggravated i.e. it’s very dry or really irritated, we wouldn’t advocate putting a clay mask on; instead consider trying our Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud instead, followed by the rose toner + balm. It’ll be a similar story if your skin is really irritated; try using the rose toner and balm to soothe the skin and bring down the inflammation.

Lastly, be kind to yourself.

Skin health requires a holistic approach so make sure you’re eating well and staying hydrated. Eat a diet that keeps your tummy microbiome healthy; a healthy tummy leads to healthy skin. Your body will thank you for it and when you add extra pamper time with a high quality clay mask, it’ll love you even more!
