Sustainability starts with where and how our ingredients are grown. We prioritize working with farmers and suppliers who uphold ethical and eco-conscious practices, including:

Beyond certifications, we carefully research the sustainability of every ingredient. If an ingredient is inherently unsustainable, we avoid it—unless a supplier can prove that their harvesting or production methods meet our rigorous sustainability standards. This is why, for instance, we choose to use RSPO Identity Preserved Palm Oil, helping support sustainable & ethical production of palm oil production.

We are currently recovering FIVE TIMES more plastic from the environment than the amount we use in our packaging and operations! That means for every 1 lb of plastic we use, we ensure 5 lbs of plastic waste is removed from the environment, making a dramatically larger positive impact on our planet's future.

How are we achieving this?

Our Plastic Waste is calculated by a third party called Bluebird Climate. This organization shares our plastic waste information with rePurpose. Through our partnership with rePurpose, we collect and recycle ocean bound plastic to restore our environment. 

At Apoterra, we are proud to be carbon negative. Every purchase funds planting of trees, in collaboration with TREES—an effort estimated to capture more carbon than we emit each year. In 2024, we emitted an estimated 14 metric tonnes of carbon and planted 40,651 trees—sequestering an estimated 71.21 metric tonnes of CO2, far surpassing our emissions.

How are we achieving this? 

Our carbon emissions are calculated by a third party called Bluebird Climate. Our offsetting calculations are based on a study by Michigan State University, which found that a TREES forest garden of 4,000 trees captures approximately 144 metric tonnes of CO2 over 20 years. Averaging this out, each year, these trees sequester around 7 tonnes of CO2. While this program isn’t yet certified, we’re actively working towards achieving certification.

Eco-friendly packaging is complex—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Factors like carbon emissions, recyclability, lifespan, and local recycling capabilities all play a role. While no packaging is perfect, we use data from Bluebird Climate to make informed decisions about our materials. We also consider the full lifecycle of our packaging by partnering with an any-brand recycling collective. 

We prioritize recyclable and recycled materials like glass and paper while minimizing plastic use wherever possible (though closures remain a challenge). Every order ships plastic-free, and for each pound of plastic we do use, we remove 5 pounds of ocean-bound plastic from the environment
