Our Pledge to the Planet

One of the first goals for Apoterra when it was founded was to make a line that was sustainable and ethical — from ingredient sourcing to the package design. The brand was founded on the belief that we only improve ourselves and our future by improving the world around us. This means taking care of self, working to elevate those around you, giving to give, and having a passion for environmentalism, animal rights and human rights. We believe nature is powerful and wise — and science is a tool to better understand nature, but does not dictate it.

Every step of our product creation and curation process is made with the entire life cycle of the product in mind. We consider every detail from where each ingredient is sourced, how they actually work, what the sensorial experience will be, and what the life of the empty bottles and jars will be once discarded. We are committed to creating and maintaining a holistically earth-friendly company. We’re also Green America and Leaping Bunny cruelty-free certified.

Almost all our ingredients are certified organic. We do thorough research to ensure that everything we put into our products is sourced sustainably — meaning there is no overharvesting and that the farming practices are not harmful to the environment. Our dream is to source all ingredients directly from small organic farms and use packaging that has no negative impact on our planet. We’re getting there. We currently work with several small farms and distilleries, and source organic and fair trade when we can.

Our products are packaged in non-toxic, easily recyclable glass and we use biodegradable packing peanuts, recycled tissue paper, and kraft boxes to ship our products. We even reuse peanuts, bubble wrap, and other supplies that we receive from vendors. Our soap labels are made from 100% post-consumer waste (PCW). Our boxes are also made from 50% PCW and the adhesive labels made from 100% PCW. It’s either recyclable or biodegradable.

There’s a reason (actually several!) why we chose glass bottles and jars over plastic for our packaging.

  • Glass in infinitely recyclable, whereas plastic is actually downcycled.
  • 91% of plastic in the United States ends up in a landfill or contaminating the environment, but 34% of glass is recycled.
  • Glass is inert, which means that it doesn't leach into the environment if it’s not recycled. Plastic on the other hand, leaches chemicals into the environment and pollutes our oceans (ever heard of the Pacific Ocean plastic island or the micro plastic issue?)
  • When comparing the FULL LIFE CYCLE of glass, plastic and aluminum, glass has the lowest carbon footprint.

Making natural products that are good for you and the planet is only the beginning. It’s just as important to us that our relationships reflect and match our own brands beliefs — which is why we decided to partner with Trees for the Future. For every product that you purchase, we will plant a tree!

Our dream is for you to be connected to the farmers and distillers that produce the gorgeous raw plant and mineral ingredients we use to make our products. Our first step to achieving this dream is our batch # system — found under a special tab on each individual product page —  which allows you to look up the country of origin and certification of all our products.
