Holistic Healing: Turmeric Cocoa (With A Purpose)
The early hours of January 31, 2018 we experienced something as special as it is rare. On this night, a total lunar eclipse, blue moon, and a supermoon will occured all at once, on one day.
Total lunar eclipses’ are usually known for being a rather ”testy” time for all signs - spiritually and emotionally, and in all parts of life. If you’ve been feeling stuck lately and unable to make any progress, or if you feel your usual boundless energy has been waning, the stars may already have you on edge...
But before you give in to those feelings of despair, maybe you could look toward this rare phenomenon in the skies as the inspiration you’ve been needing to shift your energy. And as you prepare for the unexpected, you could get a little help from our recipe for a healthy take on a comforting favorite.
Get a dose of grounding energy with our “Cocoa With A Purpose” recipe made just for you. Just a sip and you’ll feel those same feelings of joy you felt coming in from the snow as a child being greeted with a not-too-hot, not-too-cold cup of cocoa - but without the effects of regular sugar and milk in the traditional recipes of course. Ideally taken just before bed, our version is filled with healthy fats that stabilize blood sugar, raw cacao, and a mix of anti-inflammatory herbs.
As you get ready to make your cup of our cocoa, we encourage you to practice mindful eating (or in this case, sipping) and reflect on each ingredient in your mug. Savour the smells, textures, tastes, temperatures, and even the sounds as you imagine the journey each ingredient took before it landed in your kitchen.
How will my body and mind benefit from the ingredients?
Not only is cocoa rich and decadent and a special indulgence, it is jam-packed in minerals like magnesium to ease your anxiety and help you fall asleep. Cocoa has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and may help to lower blood pressure by making the blood vessels more elastic. Cocoa is also brimming in polyphenols, which provide potent antioxidant properties for the body. If that’s not enough, we should mention that cocoa is a great mood booster too!
Rose is the universal symbol of love and a natural aphrodisiac, so naturally we want it in this recipe. That’s not all rose is good for though! Rose helps to regulate the heart, mind and nervous system, so if your nerves have been a little frazzled, let rose calm your mind, body and spirit. The scent of rose can instantly uplift your spirits, a perfect pick-me-up at any time and the ideal ingredient at night before bed for a beautiful night’s rest.
This golden spice is more than just another spice. Turmeric is a powerful ancient medicine that has been used in ayurveda for centuries thanks to its unrivaled anti-inflammatory and medicinal properties. Turmeric helps to boost blood circulation and provides a cozy, warming sensation in the body. A polyphenol derived from turmeric, curcumin, can actually reverse the cellular damage caused by chronic, long-term stress, so this spice should be your go-to not just in times of stress, but as a daily habit to prevent the terrible effects stress wreaks on the mind and body.
This is our favourite anti-stress herb and you’ll know what we mean when you try it for yourself.
Ashwagandha has long been used in ayurvedic medicine for its ability to help the body better cope with stress and anxiety. Ashwagandha actually lowers the stress hormone, cortisol, to help your body better manage stress so you can feel more relaxed and at ease.
2 cups unsweetened almond milk or organic grass fed cow’s milk
2 teaspoons raw unsweetened cacao powder
¼ teaspoon rose water
½ teaspoon extra virgin coconut oil
1 tablespoon ashwaganda powder
2 teaspoons maple syrup
2 teaspoons teaspoon turmeric powder
Pinch of black pepper
Heat the milk in a small pot on low-medium stove, watching carefully as it may boil over. As the milk heats up, add cacao powder, ashwaganda powder, turmeric powder, pepper, maple syrup, and a little bit of milk to bottom of mug and stir. Once milk is heated, add to the mug and stir. Finish by adding rose water and coconut oil, then - enjoy!
