Fall Skincare Tips: How To Prevent Dry Skin And Acne

With fall finally here, it's time to start thinking about switching up your skin care routine. Why, you ask? Because what works well for your skin in the summer might NOT be ideal for your skin needs in the fall! We put together this list of fall skincare tips to help you prevent acne and dry skin—but first, let's look further into why you might need to switch up your skincare routine for autumn.

Transitioning From Summer To Fall

In the summer time, our skin is exposed to hot humid weather. This means your skin will tend to sweat and produce more sebum (oil). This can result in acne and congestion from clogged pores—but it also means that dry skin isn't usually much of an issue during the summer.

When fall arrives, things start cooling down. Our skin reacts by reducing sebum production, thereby making less oil. Fall still has its fair share of hot (and sweaty!) days, but not as many. So your skin is still dealing with the potential of clogged pores from sweat, but it is less oily and more likely to dry out. If your skin does become dry, it will be flaky and not function protectively very well, which often results in breakouts and a not-so-glowing complexion...Argh! The fight never ends, right?

So, that's why a routine that works to keep your skin clear in the summer might NOT work for you anymore in the fall. Summer is all about protecting your skin from sun damage with SPF + antioxidants, dealing with oilier skin, and fighting breakouts. Fall is a mixture of protecting the skin and addressing the changes that it is facing because of the drop in temperatures. To prevent dry skin and breakouts that fall can bring on, here is a list of skincare tips you can try:

5 Tips For Glowing Skin This Fall

1. Use a non-drying facial cleanser that fights breakouts.

You will want to look for a cleanser that can fight off bad bacteria without stripping the skin of beneficial oils. A cleanser that is nourishing and gently exfoliating is a plus! We recommend our Pumpkin + Wild Carrot Complexion Soap for a gentle brightening cleanse or the Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud for a gentle exfoliating cleanse.

2. Hydrate the skin using an acne-fighting toning mist.

Because your skin is producing less oils, it isn't sealing in water as well as it used to. One step you can take to keep your skin hydrated is to use a face mist, aqueous toner, or hydrating serum. Look for a product that contains acne-fighting ingredients (and NO alcohol) to simultaneously fight dry skin and acne. We recommend our Neroli Clarifying Complexion Mist for this task. It contains Vitamin C and niacinamide to help brighten and even skin tone, alongside neroli water, green tea, and willow bark to help clarify skin and ward off breakouts.

3. Use a nourishing and balancing facial oil as your moisturizer.

You want to use something that will effectively seal in moisture without being too heavy, since your skin is in a transitional period. You also need your moisturizer to provide your skin with much needed nourishment to keep your skin barrier healthy AND fight blemishes. We love natural facial oils because they can be all of the above, without added fillers or synthetic preservatives!

The best acne-fighting, nourishing oil for the task is our Sea Berry Balancing Facial Oil. Because it is so high in nutrients, this oil deeply nourishes & protects the skin, and it has a gorgeous orange hue from fresh sea buckthorn berries.

Our Herbal Clarifying Facial Oil is also a congestion savior (especially for the oily skin types among us)—it is super-powered with immortelle essential oil and a light-weight, blemish-busting herbal infusion of green tea, thyme, and tamanu oil (rich in omega-6).

If you are most concerned about dry skin, reach for our Rose Nourishing Facial Oil which uses rosehip oil, rose absolute, and the antioxidant CoQ10 to reveal healthier, calmer, firmer skin.

4. Exfoliate several times a week.

Exfoliating will help ward off that ashy appearance, keep skin looking fresh and vibrant, and keep pores clear. We recommend exfoliating 2-4 times a week at this time of year (you'll need it!). Try using our Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud as a mask 2-3 times per week, or use it as an exfoliating cleanser up to 4 times per week.

 5. Try aromatherapy.

While the seasons are in transition, it can be stressful for our bodies to adapt. A key way to help prevent our skin from showcasing excess stress during these seasonal changes is the use of aromatherapy. With the Tulsi Adaptogenic Aromatherapy Oil, you can add a grounding scent directly onto the neck, collarbones and wrists. Once applied, take a deep breath to functionally reduce stress and boost mood.
