"Calm was born out of a desire to continue to connect with people ~ to help, to inspire, to calm, give solace, and authenticity in skincare… over the years it has truly evolved into a place where I love to be. I go to work feeling light and ready to give whatever is asked of me.. and THAT is what is fun."
Can you tell us a little bit about your background?
I have a liberal arts degree.. English. I never truly used it, in a vocational sense, instead fell in to event planning, and destination management… I found I loved the relationships that are made, formed, enjoyed and fostered while working on a project.. I suppose I love relationships in general! After eight years of events and freelance gigs in Asheville, NC (not to mention the market crash of 2008), I wanted to change pretty much everything about my life. I moved back to my hometown Austin, TX and sought a license in esthetics.
Why did you decide to start your own studio?
I always knew the goal would be to work for myself, on my terms. Calm was born out of a desire to continue to connect with people ~ to help, to inspire, to calm, give solace, and authenticity in skincare… over the years it has truly evolved into a place where I love to be. I go to work feeling light and ready to give whatever is asked of me.. and THAT is what is fun. I don’t always know the skin issue I’ll be faced with that day, or maybe it’s a bigger life issue that a client will share.. I get to be a part of people’s lives in a practical way, and improve their skin! I certainly don’t take that privilege for granted.
Can you give us a glimpse into what you offer at Calm?
I offer customized facials and skin solutions. No face is like another, so I really try and get to the root of why they have walked thru my door that day. Oftentimes it’s a process, and won’t be solved in a day… My studio sits among the trees on an upper story; it really is a dreamy getaway with tons of natural light.
Why do you choose to work with natural skincare products?
Natural, green, nontoxic beauty is AUTHENTIC. There is so much to learn about ingredients, how each affects the skin, what is best for your condition, how this ingredient pared with that ingredient or oil or extract will create healing… I could read about ingredients all day. Likewise, I nerd out about labels. :)
I love that about you! Could you share with us your favorite beauty tip?
Less is better. Simple is better. Yogurt, manuka honey, oats, apple cider vinegar, omega 3 and 6 oils: all of these are readily available and infinitely beneficial.
What does your personal skincare ritual mean to you?
My skincare rituals (I have many) feel luxurious and pure. The older I get the more I want to lean in to the best way to care for my skin. The best ingredients will always get the best results, period. This transfers, obviously, over in to what you put in your body, as well.
Are there any common mistakes that you see and would like to share advice about?
Stop over-cleansing your skin!! Also, these days clients are more savvy.. but some still need to know: oil is not the enemy.
YES! We just wrote a blog post last week about over-cleansing. It is such a common mistake because of the common misconception that dirt and too much oil is the only cause of break outs. Obviously we see eye to eye! Can you tell us why you choose Apoterra Skincare for your business?
Because you love ingredients as much as I do, Dominique!
What is your favorite Apoterra product and why?
I’ve seen the Herbal/Night oils change my client’s skin. Those who suffer from breakouts and hormonal acne have loved the tea tree/tamanu/immortelle/blue chamomile liquid gold!!!! Personally, I am obsessed with how supple my skin feels due to using the Rose Nourishing Serum. The omegas 3, 6, & 9 (hello! trans-retinoic esters!), in addition to COQ10! It’s the bomb.
What is the best way for people to connect with you?
