With fall finally here (is it just me or was this summer brutally hot?!), it's time to start thinking about switching up your skin care routine. Why you ask? Because what works well for your skin in the summer might not work as well in the fall. We put together this list of fall skincare tips to help you prevent acne and dry skin, but first let's look further into why you might need to switch up your skincare routine this autumn.
Transitioning From Summer To Fall
In the summer time, our skin is exposed to hot humid weather and air conditioning (well, at least here in NYC!). This means your skin will tend to sweat and produce more sebum (oil). This can result in acne from clogged pores, but it also means that dry skin isn't usually much of an issue during the summer.
When fall arrives, things start cooling down. Our skin reacts to this by reducing sebum production (making less oil). Fall still has its fare share of hot days (aka sweaty days!), but not as many. So your skin is still dealing with the potential of clogged pores from sweat, but it is also less oily/more dry. If your skin does become dry, it will be flaky and not function so well which often results in break outs and a not so glowing complexion . . . Argh! The fight never ends, right?
So that is why, what might work to keep your skin clear in the summer might not work for you in the fall. Summer is all about protecting your skin for the sun with antioxidants, dealing with oilier skin and fighting breakouts. Fall is a mix of protecting the skin, but also dealing with the changes that are happening to your skin because of the drop in temperature. To prevent dry skin and break outs that fall can bring, here is a list of skincare tips you can try.
5 Tips For Glowing Skin This Fall
1. Use a non drying facial cleanser that fights break outs.
You want to look for a cleanser that will fight off bad bacteria without stripping the skin of beneficial oils. A cleanser that is nourishing or gently exfoliating is a plus. We recommend our Pumpkin + Wild Carrot Soap and/or the Hibiscus Exfoliating Mud.
2. Hydrate the skin using an acne fighting alcohol-free toner or mist.
Because your skin in producing less oils, it isn't sealing in water as well as it used to. One step you can take to keep your skin hydrated is by using a face mist, toner or hydrating serum. Look for a product that contains acne-fighting ingredients to simultaneously fight dry skin and acne. We recommend our Neroli Clarifying Toner for this task.
3. Use nourishing yet balancing facial oils as your moisturizer.
You want to use something that will effectively seal in moisture without being too heavy since your skin is in a transitional period. You also want your facial oil to provide your skin with much needed nourishment to keep your skin barrier healthy AND also provide blemish fighting ingredients. We love facial oils because they can be all of the above, without added fillers or synthetic preservatives. The best oil for this task is our Night Clarifying Treatment. 4. Exfoliate several times weekly.
Exfoliating will help keep that ashy look away, keep skin looking fresh and vibrant, but also keep pores clear. We recommend exfoliating 2-4 times a week at this time of year.
